Isn't it the second time only that a whole country goes on emergency alert for a cyber attack? The first was Estonia in 2007.
Others cases I forgot?
Israel has super good cyber capacities, so that attack must be massive and/or highly effective.
This is the main information: such attacks are possible, not irrational fear or fruit of imagination.
On Twitter, everybody is pointing the finger to Iran - because Iranians have motive - but without any proof.
Has Iran developed such cyber attack capacities? Always possible, let's not prejudice taint our judgment. But that would be news. Iran (or another enemy of Israel) could also have recruited "cyber mercenaries". Or are those a myth?
I'm no expert but my understanding is that very few countries have developed such an high level: the USA and China. I would have added Russia but we haven't seen obvious cyber victories over Ukraine yet, so... One explanation could be that Russia is on the defensive mode on the cyber front, being attacked by many black and white hat groups, plus Ukrainians of course.
North Korea has shown real capacity, like the steal of 190 M$ from the central bank of Bangladesh. The BBC made an amazing 8-hour podcast about this heist. A super tiny detail led to an early blocking of the money transfer, otherwise the theft would have amounted to almost 1 B$!
But the podcast explained that their "cyberwarriors" have for main mission to steal money in foreign currencies, so that NK can circumvent the sanctions and import what they need the most.
China making a point to the USA by attacking one of its closest ally? This attack happens the day when US and Chinese meet in Rome to discuss China's position on Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
Well, let's wait and see if Israel denounce a culprit. But if it is China, for example, Israel may attribute the responsibility to Iran, since it would provide justification for the future.
I'm just thinking aloud here, for the sake of mind play. What do you imagine possible?
