I really wish there was more sort of pro-grass-roots democratic technology in progress, in development. There's so many places where centralization is converting to authoritarianism, & this is still in my view exteemely extremely bad, is gross.
Commotion Wireless[1] is a prime example, of the government stepping in to fund open source, easily deployable mesh communication systems, tbat fly in the face of these crackdowns. Byt it feels like it's been a decade since we dared have vision, sought to provide necessary & adequate technical underpinnings for democratic ideals to survive & flourish. We should fund mesh technogy, we should fund deployable cheap mesh infrastructure, we should promote decentralized media platforms.
There's some other long running works in the area, but few as overtly bootstrap/disconnected yet active & participation oriented; keeping people connecting. Serval project, FreedomBox, Internet-in-a-bix, heck, olpc/xopc/sugar.
We carry around extremely capable communication devices yet almost all use to talk to each other is over centralized infrastructure systems. Starting to get good at wifi-p2p, neighbor awareness, bluetooth systems, & perhaps even diy cellular ought be something society invests in, to ensure the doors to communication cannot be slammed shut. Being able to directly speak to those around us, digitally, is/ought be a simple & baseline virtue of the digital, & it fully could be, if we only bothered to use the hardware we already all own.
[1] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commotion_Wireless

What does Zelensky mean here by requiring a "unified information policy"? News is news, is the Ukrainian government actually saying that anything which doesn't get approved by his government is not reportable?
