Ask HN: What Happened to Subliminal Messaging?

3 pointsby b_u_n_n_yabout 3 years ago
When I was younger (30+ years ago) subliminal messaging was a huge hot topic and concern. I remember sitting in the cinema and trying to spot whether there were any quick screen flashes of Coca Cola or Pepsi.
However, now that we’re in a world of video-based social media and digital world, it doesn’t seem to be a concern. Is subliminal messaging still used? Is it illegal, and are there any recent or modern examples of it being used.

Much of it is overt these days. Instead of a subtle flash of a product, we have paid product placement that has been fully embraced by game and media industries. Here's David Lynch talking about it 15 years ago:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4wh_mc8hRE

To first order there is no such thing.
