Back in the '70's when I was studying EECS at Cal I remember one of my professors saying that his mnemonic for distinguishing the Hanning filter from the Hamming filter was that Hamming is in Monterey. Now that I think of it, since the guy who invented the Hanning window had the name of Von Hann, the "ing" at the end of Hanning must have been some kind of accommodation to Hamming.
