Tell HN: DuckDuckGo and Bing removed tass.com from their search results

2 pointsby yeahmanabout 3 years ago
Around a month ago DDG announced they would be "down ranking" Russian disinformation (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30627892&p=3).
This sounds like it should just be lower in the search results, however that is not the case.
Searching for "tass bucha" has no results from tass.com. In fact "site:tass.com bucha" gives zero results.
Meanwhile Google has no issues displaying these results.
Tass is not even banned on an EU level like RT and Sputnik are.
Turns out it is not possible to search for the other sides story on DDG and Bing. Google wins again..

That’s because DDG uses Bing search results. So its unsurprising to see DDG and Bing manipulating search results.
Google is able to do the exact same thing and can manipulate, downrank and censor search results. So they are no different.

part of why we're using topic filters to put algorithmic control back in hands of users on Breeze, here's search for Bucha filtered for tass.com, https://breezethat.com/?q=bucha+site%3Atass.com
