The very fact that you can write an article like this without fear of consequences shows that the media is not "under siege", as the author claims. Sure, there are incidents of government overreach (like when Maharashtra govt jailed the popular owner/anchor Arnab Goswami of Republic TV), but as a whole the Indian media usually just says any old thing.
IMO one problem is India doesn't have the concept of absolute freedom of speech. While freedom of speech is enshrined in the constitution, there are several laws that curtail it, like laws against blasphemy, defamation, etc., which are often (ab)used by the rich and powerful to silence their critics. And it's not only the govt which does it - (allegedly) fraudulent educational institutions like IIPM [1] and WhiteHat Jr [2] have done it too.
1. https://scroll.in/article/817592/how-iipm-and-arindam-chaudh...
2. https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/whitehat-jr-founder-fi...
Disclosure should be clear, the owner of newslaundry in India is Abinandan Sekri and seen to be closely aligned with the Delhi ruling party AAP.
The article itself is not clear about how the data is divided up. For example it mentions media facing death threats, whilst this is nasty, it's not uncommon all across the world even just look at twitter threads.
