At Wells Fargo, a Quest to Increase Diversity Leads to Fake Job Interviews

Why is anyone surprised? This is the logical outcome of tying executive compensation to diversity initiatives.
These initiatives turn human beings into quota.
Minorities have become a tool woke corporations can parade around to make themselves “look good.”
It doesn’t look good. It’s dehumanizing.

This happens at Twitter.
Their diversity program is a complete waste of time but makes the company look better in saying that they at least interview one diverse candidate for each interview panel.
Diverse candidates are asked to interview for a job they are not even closely experienced enough to work in or in an adjacent field. Upon saying to HR, “Hey, this is not my area of expertise” the Twitter recruiters still compel them to interview with it resulting in being a couple waste of time for them.
The Rooney Rule hasn’t worked for the NFL and it hasn’t worked elsewhere either.
Interviewing is fundamentally broken everywhere because of lazy hiring managers and recruiters BUT it’s even more broken for those without power in their industries.

I suspect this happens a lot. A place I worked at would post a job and interview candidates for a job that had already been promised to someone. They did it so that they would followed a company policy that required such actions before a job position could be filled. The policy was there so that the best candidate was always hired but humans being humans sometimes the best candidate for a position was a friend irrigarless of skills.
I suspect many people here have seen or been part of the same situation.

The incentives here are so twisted. This is purely based on an output metric so they can say "We increased our hiring of diverse candidates by X%". Meanwhile, minorities suffer a lot of issues that aren't taken seriously (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc) and they end up quitting - and often signing an NDA with a settlement to keep them from speaking out...rinse and repeat, now we get more new hires that we can brag about.
As the other comments state this is unsurprising as people are really suffering a lack of identity under peak capitalism and neoliberalism is fueling this with this crappy virtue signalling stuff while continuing to make things objectively worse for minorities.

Coming from the company where a quest for profit led to creating fake accounts.
