US urban planners cannot wholly undo sprawl

What this blog post fails to mention is how the urban sprawl is intentional. Dense cities are not easily defensible against nuclear bombs or conventional bombardment. A sprawl makes evacuation easier and sieges harder.<p>I think a sprawl but instead of freeways, public transport. And abundant bicycle lanes makes a lot of sense. Electric car still need parking which means hotter cities that are not ready for climate change (e.g.: Hurricane harvey was made worse because of all the concrete). Electric cars are nowhere near ready for long commutes either. I had a job that requires 100-200 mile driving around the city. Waiting 45min+queue to charge is not acceptable. Neither is stopping to charge for hours everyday on a roadtrip. The ideal solution would be hybrids with bicycle and walking as the main form of city transportation in short-medium distances and public transport in between. Electric only means the parking structures that are typically larger than the buildings people go to might get bigger for charging stations due to ubiquity, less space for housing&#x2F;people more space for machines.
