Ask HN: Google Tech News is usually about video games

Anyone frequent reader of Google News tech section? I feel, most news covered there is in gaming / AR-VR space. Does anyone know how Google decides its display? Is it most popular traffic based?

I de-googled a few years back, but I noticed the same thing when I still using Android with a Google account. Google News tech section was almost entirely gaming news. I don't game and don't care, so definitely don't buy any claim that feed personalization was causing it. Google News in general did seem to somewhat respond to my requests to hide sources and my explicit downranking, and it definitely tried to show stuff similar to what I'd clicked on before, but you can only personalize with reference to a baseline, and if the baseline for the tech news section is everything is gaming-related, there isn't any way to get out of that. Hiding everything won't make other stuff appear.
Frankly, I think they need to just break it out into its own section. Game releases and reviews especially are entertainment news, but Google had a similar issue there where the actual "entertainment" section was news about celebrity gossip, not development leaks and reviews for film, television, and music.
Same thing with "world" news being overwhelmingly about war and "US" news being overwhelmingly about election horserace crap. War and elections should have their own dedicated sections so it's still possible to read about other things.
Their categories just seemed poorly defined in general. The only one that really seemed to give you what it says is sports. That actually gives you player movement, current league stats and standings, and recent box scores. They still muddy the waters a bit with the sports version of celebrity gossip, but at least it doesn't dominate everything else.

I think it is tailored to your reading/browsing habits.
