Ask HN: Parents of HN, how does your workout schedule look like?

2 pointsby recvonlinealmost 3 years ago
I am coming back into the workforce after 1 year of paternity leave! I ran three times a week and now I wonder how I can fit in workouts and being active while having to work 40h and having two kids at home!

While riding bikes is a part of how we get around, going for a tempo ride alone or with a group is not part of my routine anymore. I hopped in the Monday Night ride last week for the first time in ~3 years because my wife agreed to handle bath/bed on her own ( I got back in time to help get my son down to bed )
These are the trade-offs. I can hop on my bike mid-day when they're off at a park, and I have a break in meetings, but that's incredibly rare and not a schedule.
We recently bought a rowing machine to help with the regularity part of our fitness. Not needing to leave home is certainly easier than having to go somewhere with kiddos.

Before kids, I biked 20 miles every other day and played a field sport several times a week. When my first kid was born, I had to drop the sports and I switched to jogging while pushing a pram. Now that my kids are older, I coach them in the sport I played and given it is an open field sport I get a good amount of exercise just coaching and demonstrating.
The important part in my opinion to to keep active. Even 20 mins a day is a big win.
