All of the amounts in the article seem way too high. He’s paying farang price. A one BR apt in a decent location in Bangkok is much less than $2700. Almost every apt/condo for foreigners has gym and pool and maid service. And you’d have to eat at expensive foreigner restaurants every day to spend $1,600/mo for food.
I lived there for five years and could do it for well under $4k/mo.
Bangkok is full of expats living on pensions, spending far less than this guy. When I saw the $8,000/mo number I thought “alcohol and bar girls,” the usual downfall of the Thailand newb.
