This sounds like they went extinct. I recognize Alaska is a conservative state, but it shouldn’t take a genius to work this out.<p>If they do exist elsewhere in the world then they’re still regionally extinct, which you’d expect when exposed to rapid environmental change that counters their evolved characteristics.<p>This sounds pretty much the same as if people went fishing at a lake, and then when the dries up they start asking what happened to the fish.

They died. Mass extinction. We are ruining the earth. It’s almost like all of this technology comes at a cost.
