Prompting an AI to make a picture seems comparable to paying another artist to make a picture for you with prompts, and I would personally consider that situation similarly ethically unacceptable for submission to competitions.<p>There's a sucky debate here to be had which is the same debate about originality in songs made of samples from other songs, and I guess we'd probably end up at "I'll know originality when I see it", but this to me underscores the importance of watermarking/fingerprinting generated works. I guess that that ship has sailed, however.<p>Worse for me is the fact that he did not clearly disclose the fact that the piece was generated to the judge at submission time.<p>Maybe digital art competitions are over.
