When and How did a Y Combinator know it had built something people want?

This is probably one of the YC questions that had been imprinted in mind. Been wondering at what point YC hit PMF. Were there any early hiccups and learnings around this.

I recall that PG started it because he was writing essays, and doing talks, and students at the talk were asking him for more advice.<p>And then another point where he figured that angels were getting a pretty damn big cut, because one of the angels who invested in his company got an excellent ROI.<p>And the first YC batch was outstandingly good.
