Interesting essay that supports the theory that failure of the first telegraph cable was due to co-axial manufacturing tolerance issues rather than by applying "excessive voltage" as is commonly cited. Though the conclusion notes the "excessive voltage" excuse (and by extension scapegoating Dr. Whitehouse) served as a more palatable justification for securing finances for a second attempt in 1866.
