Need to understand a few more details here. First as world human population is aging, mortality is expected to rise regardless of new diseases. Second, some frail individuals may have lived a couple of years longer if not for COVID-19, but how many would have lived 10 years longer? We may see a temporary dip in mortality going forward if most deaths were only hastened by relatively short time. Finally, how many of the deaths were from various aspects of response to virus rather than the virus itself - crime, suicide, missed doctor appointments etc?
