It's been that way a while, I still remember someone making a comment back in 2018/19ish when I interviewed with the IT dept at a top 5 CS school that they were reluctant because I "might have to go to Qatar". (I couldn't tell if they thought I had an Israeli passport or that being queer was an issue, but it was a very WTF moment in a job interview)
