I was reminded of this fact, when rewatching Kubrick's 2001 recently. All the computer tech predicted in that movie has come to pass; e.g., the handheld flat screen displays, the conversational AI, etc. Yet, the space travel as envisioned, the engineering megastructures, have not materialized. Still, I remain optimistic that computing tech can have more real world consequences especially with drug discovery in the age of AI. Since software is eating the world, maybe the solution is to virtualize what has not been eaten already, and port it back to reality when all the problems have been worked out.
