Living in SF, how much do you need to earn?

What's the average salary one needs to have in order to have a "decent" life in SF?

I went for 6 months and earned twice as much as I had ever earned. This was 2015 when prices were lower. I worked right on Market street. It became immediately obvious that there was no job that could pay me enough to make up for the quality of life downgrade.
Housing was expensive and of poor quality. Crime was visible every day. Homelessness was out of control. Policing was broken and antagonistic. Residents were openly hostile to anyone they felt didn’t belong in “their city.” I felt unsafe all the time, even at 8 in the morning. I was chased, grabbed and screamed at on my way to work.
I took a few months just to see the sights and have a new experience, try the well rated restaurants and vibe with the people a bit. Then I left, never to return.
The world is full of so many great, safe and interesting places. No amount of salary is going to change the facts on the ground. If you hide in your house, why bother being there, especially in these times when the offices are empty anyway with everyone staying at home.

My cousin lives there, in a formerly exclusive neighborhood. Their family is afraid to leave the house at night.
