Alex’s posts on web performance are always on point and it’s a real shame that there are so few people talking about both the ethical crisis and climate impact of slow software.
I live in New Zealand where we had a remarkably successful fibre internet rollout, and there’s a definite blind spot for web users who don’t have access to such high quality infrastructure. It can be difficult to get buy in for getting performance work done and I think articles like this one are useful.
For people interestee in climate, there’s a great bit about the CO2 savings from the optimizations introduced in PHP 7 [1]. Small energy savings multiplied across many computers is impactful.
[1] http://conf2.php.net/bnl19#/impact4
