So much for a bright future for democracies. Sounds like the US version of the Great Firewall... horseshoe at work.<p>I'll add to this that the superior, enlightened HN attitude of "tech solves everything" naive optimism really pisses me off because of developments like this. Previous rebellions against tyranny were successful because there were gaps in information, to know where people were, who they were with, what they were discussing, and what resources they had at their command. Computing technology has been building to this <i>complete</i> asymmetry of power for decades, far outstripping the pace of our governance and morals, and only complete idiots and fools would have failed to see that <i>this</i> is the outcome. You thought you were safe from literal 1984 despite any memes about it because it had been written as a cautionary tale? I'd hazard that more people on this site than a site like reddit helped to bring it into existence.
