Tesla Optimus, OpenAI, and Embodiment

2 pointsby dalyabout 2 years ago
It has been suggested that Tesla could build hundreds of Optimus robots, set them loose in a mall, and let them learn things like avoiding each other, climbing steps, folding clothes, and working in groups.
A large number of similar robots would enable Tesla to gather data, similar to what they are doing with cars.
Combining Optimus with ChatGPT would give the GPT an embodiment. The conjecture is that embodiment is necessary for an AI to have agency.
The problem may be more subtle than it looks. OpenAI had a presentation showing the difficulty of moving from a simulation to an actual mechanical implementation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRsxoVB8Yng&list=PLOXw6I10VTv9DFXRidukLC2hgAAkmexWx&index=4&t=3442s
