I work at a small non-profit research organization that is funded mostly by research grants from federal funding agencies (NIH, NSF, etc.), with most of the remainder coming from endowment interest. The org has little experience with non-grant based fundraising. What are the most effective ways to fundraise? I'm familiar with different approaches, ranging from hiring a professional fundraiser and hoping that their efforts will more than repay their salary after a few years, to focusing on more informal/grassroots fundraising efforts. Looking for pointers on the most effective fundraising approaches and also on how much money might realistically be raised in the process.
