In talking with engineers across the industry, it seems that many are struggling. My read on the root cause is that an increase in pressure from the top is causing more toxic behaviors from employers. In the past two months, I've heard everything from "the market is flooded with talent we should cut the bottom 20%" to "let's force RTO as that's a good way to get 5% to leave".
It's easy to step back and say "these are terrible short term decisions and that these companies will suffer in the long term". Yet, the impact on people and morale is devastating to watch. Many that have been laid off are struggling to land interviews with the average staff job positing receiving 1000+ qualified candidates from FAANGs.
So two questions: a) have you been affected by the macro changes b) what can an I, or an any individual, do to help?
