Ask HN: Am I wrong to feel sorry for people that mindlessly scroll all day long?

2 pointsby sturzaabout 2 years ago
I just observe everyone around me(strangers included) just scroll garbage every few minutes like a reflex and i'm not sure how i'm supposed to react or behave as a response to that.

It's an open secret that social media and engangement metrics has created something that we don't know how to undo now. No media whether it be news or entertainment will show you anything but what they think gets extra engagement. Outrage, clickbait, infinite scrolling, auto-playing content, recommendations etc.
Just have a look at r/teachers to see what the next generation of kids look like. They can't concentrate more than 30 seconds. I'm no expert on this subject, so I would just recommend watching the AI Dilemma video which goes a bit into the social media side, but also talks about LLMs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoVJKj8lcNQ

You just noticed this? I've lived in this world of phone-zombies for years, it was a bit disturbing at first, but it seems they're not dangerous, you get used to it.

This battle will never be won with pity. It's also a waste of mental resources, emotional capacity, etc. Besides, this issue will only get more prevalent in the coming years unless a superconscious deity decides to interfere and enlighten this planet at scale.

Humans will always spend their time doodling or burning wasted compute cycles. Cave dwellers spent an awful lot of time throwing stones into rivers. Boredom is uncurable and should not be taken in a sorrowful manner.
- ChatGPT

Humans are consumerists. It’s the best thing we have to maintain peace and some semblance of unity.

Feel sorry? Empathy? Sympathy? Maybe they enjoy it? Why are you judging them? Live and let live.
