I feel like Spotify recommendations, artist radio, and "Discovery Weekly" has become an echo chamber of music that's fine, but isn't that interesting, or new. What are some better ways to discover new music?
I find lots of music by browsing the charts at https://rateyourmusic.com
When I’m feeling adventurous, I just pick a year or decade and start listening to the most hi hi my rated albums I haven’t heard yet.
Their genre categories are great too
I love listening to https://radioparadise.com especially when I don't want to choose what to listen to. Apart from their main stream, they have special streams for mellow, rock, and "world" music (don't like that word, but it is what it is).
I go through https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_in_heavy_metal_music and listen to just released albums.
1. Search “jukebox” and the latest Bollywood/Tollywood musicals on YouTube
2. Distractingly good music in high quality TV shows. Those music directors for US tv shows are insanely good music curators
3. My kid
4. Guitar song or style tutorials on YouTube
https://everynoise.com/ might be worth a look - start from an artist that you like and explore their genres
YouTube offers up playlists of music, sometimes there are interesting things I've not heard before.
https://radio.garden is fun too
Ten years ago it was the Pandora algorithm. It really did a good job of distilling genres. (Spotify has never quite been able to match this for me, though sometimes the “mood” playlists provide good results)
These days, I read a lot of music biographies, and that tends to lead me down interesting paths. Read about Bowie, you’ll learn about Mick Ronson, the Stooges, etc. Read about the Talking Heads, you’ll learn about Fela Kuti. Read about the Beastie Boys, you’ll learn about.. well almost everything.
I also feel like my Spotify playlists have gone cold. Once I had 6 covers in a row.
I’ve recently switched to Qobuz which is more editorial and less algorithmic. Overall very happy with their recs.
YouTube suggestions, Reddit, IG, Facebook groups, Deezer playlists, Podcasts, Bandcamp suggestions, even IMDB for soundtracks of films I've enjoyed.
