Ask HN: How to Find Problems to Work On?

1 pointsby x86hacker1010almost 2 years ago
For years I’ve built random projects that die out or go nowhere, mostly so I can learn some new tech.
This is draining without coding for some purpose. How do I find this purpose? The most passionate hobby I have is coding, but feeling lost in figuring out what to build.

- Solve your own problems, personal or your job related
- Talk to family and friends and solve their personal or job related problems
- Join communities online (facebook, reddit etc) you find interesting and solve their problems
- Join platform communities (wordpress, shopify etc), engage people, find their problems and solve them
You need to combine coding with something else, some other field, unless you want to focus on projects related to coding
If you can't see things to fix/improve in your own personal or professional life that are interesting enough to keep you going, you need to go out, be a little social and engage others. Get out of your own head/room/circle
(Note that this is for finding project ideas. If you want to find business ideas, the process starts off the same but there are additional steps to make sure you can build a worthwhile and sustainable business)

Focus on some problem in a popular open source project. Practically any large project will have longstanding bugs/deficiencies.
