I have been hearing it enough lately that it's starting to look like people think the word "democracy" refers to a kind of enlightened state with some sort of guarantees of fairness or justice.<p>Democracy literally means majority rule, that's all. Why would anyone expect that to result in fairness?<p>If you want guarantees of fairness and justice then you need something else as well (like a set of guaranteed baseline rights, an independent judicial body to uphold them etc.)
