Ask HN: Recommendations for Universal Translator failure/Tower of Babel sci-fi?

1 pointsby b1nalmost 2 years ago
Are there any sci-fi stories with the following scenario...
- Most people only speak their local language
- They form close relationships (e.g. marriage) with people who doesn't speak their language.
- They can only communicate with their loved ones via a "universal translator".
- The universal translator breaks down.
- They can no longer communicate with their loved ones.
I'm sure I've seem similar themes, but it's usually with aliens or an inability to communicate with everyone regardless of language.
