Ask HN: Where to find clients for custom software development work?

5 pointsby mr_o47almost 2 years ago
Hello,
I have been using upwork and fiver for a while but I have not been able to find good quality clients since everyone comes with a mindset of getting done things very cheap. For instance they won't pay good rate for quality instead they would waste time or just want something cheaper.
This hurts developers who do quality work for their clients.
Also I won't say all clients are like that but I did had some awesome clients but very few.
I would like to ask HN who are into freelancing how do you find your clients or if you run a software development company how do you find you find good clients

Depends on the clientele you are after.. I've been lucky at times, usually going to some fun event ... talking to the owners of small businesses and letting them know what I do, and usually they end up interested in me doing something for them. You could also search Craigslist and either put yourself out there or see who needs something. Networking helps too... make friends, see who needs anything. You can also email former clients and see if they need any work.

Look for people on Twitter asking for 1-time help. And keep helping them.
Getting known for a specific genre of web dev could be useful to get out of the upwork doldrums.
