A concept our fast tech culture just completely whiffed on is the macroeconomic idea that you may make more money in the short run forcing obsolesence, but if we made things universal and modular (interchangable and reusable), everyone in society saves money. the time and effort of absolutely everyone has a dollar value. what Apple makes in the short term is swamped by the tsunami of savings reusability all of society reaps in the long term. It's just too bad there is so little room saved in our social planning for rewards reaped down the road.
