As with ever other nuclear energy proponent, there’s not much thought put into anything but electricity generation. But that’s just one part of the battle.
The only comprehensive net zero carbon plan I’ve seen, that involves significant nuclear power and is cheaper than just going all-in on renewables, involve a very high amount of carbon capture and storage. Thats not a sustainable plan and just yet another debt for our descendants to deal with.
The plans for 100% renewables does require more investments in battery and energy storage technology/infrastructure, yes. Some of the technologies we need don’t quite exist yet (though that goes for CCS too). But there is simply no viable path to net carbon neutrality without that. You can’t run your car on a nuclear reactor.
If you make a comprehensive plan that includes things like transportation, steel production, fertiliser production, etc, then it’s easy to see that it makes much more sense to just focus on renewables. There are for more synergies in the technologies we have to develop to go all-in on renewables and every other technology we need to get to net carbon neutrality.
