Hello, HN community. Curious about which dumbphones people might be using that they are happy with?
Initially, I looked at the Nokia Tough 800 but was saddened to discover it came pre-loaded with Facebook, Youtube, and other such apps. Having access to those makes it a non-starter for me.
Initially, the device seems like a good option as it supports hosting a personal hotspot which would make it feasible to have a secondary device such as a pad to use apps such as Swish and BankID which are somewhat fundamental in Swedish society.
However, through work, I have an iPhone so in theory I could transfer the SIM between devices as necessary (?) and bring the iPhone along as a camera anyway.
My ideal device would have had Swish, BankID, and Spotify but no web browser but that seems impossible. I guess I'd be fine with GPS+phone+SMS. If it is somewhat robust too that'd be swell as I'm a rock climber among other things.
Might be able to address the music need by buying a secondhand iPhone Touch or something... The Mighty Vibe seems disappointing.
I've tried using stuff like Freedom to tend myself toward digital minimalism and not have to have several devices but haven't been super successful in that regard yet which is why I'm exploring this avenue now.
Suggestions for dumbphones + device combos would be desirable.
Thank you.
Nokia 105[0] for my main phone. It uses the Series 30+ operating system. NO bloatware like Facebook or Whatsapp. Infact it doesn't even connect to the web at all. The only distraction on it is the preloaded games like Snake and Tetris.
[0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_105_(2019)
