You know, this whole thing is baffling, really. And let's strip away some layers of social justice and get to a root issue, a root question here: who has rights to a child?
Who has rights to a child and for what purposes? The UK and USA have long been setting precedent that parents do not have sovereign, inalienable rights for their children in terms of such things as medical decisions and education, and I don't know how it is outside these USA, but Child Protection agencies are like a Twilight Zone of fear for many parents, whose children could be ripped away from them on the flimsiest of evidence.
So who has rights to a child? Do the parents have rights to know what goes on in the classroom? To know what the child's up to, in terms of discipline, behavior, secrets confided to a teacher? Do the parents have a right to intervene in such matters? What about medical issues? Do parents have rights to know a minor child's conditions, procedures, and do they have a right to choose what HCPs do to that child? In many cases, the legal answer is already "no", and personally, I find that chilling.
