Ask HN: What things do you avoid?

5 pointsby robalniover 1 year ago
It could be something that a lot of people use but you don't because you think it's bad or wrong or whatever the reason might be. Avoiding something on your own doesn't make a big difference but if we tell each other about it we can make a bigger difference to punish the bad things and benefit the good things.
1. What things do you avoid using or doing?
2. What are the reasons that you don't want to do or use this thing?
3. What do you do or use instead to solve the same problem?

1) Social media. News. Most forms of advertising
2) I don't like filling my mind with garbage and being influenced by business interests unnecessarily
3) Wholesale reject all forms of advertising, and let nothing replace it. In the paraphrased words of Banksy, fuck all advertising.

> 1. What things do you avoid using or doing?
Cow Milk.
> 2. What are the reasons that you don't want to do or use this thing?
Lactose intolerant. Also cow milk is too acidic and causes stomach aches. It also strips the body of calcium due to the acid, despite dairy industry propaganda saying the calcium in milk supports bones. It's also full of dairy fat which has no nutritional value apart from fattening one up (and feeling satiated).
> 3. What do you do or use instead to solve the same problem?
Almond milk.

Most subscriptions or anything that auto renews, locks me in, or gives a "discount" up front in exchange for a contract I can't leave.
