We created AI in the image of what we believe how we work. Its not that we are an AI, we attempt to mimic our concepts of ourselves in the development of AI. As the article points out, excepting "deep sleep" we are always online, i.e., conscious. But ignoring the parts we don't understand won't allow us to understand ourselves fully.
What we ignore are all the unconscious, instinctive actions that are also part of us (i.e. emotion, reflex, "gut feelings", and so on). Sleep is also part of us. So in asking the question "what is the self" and ignoring a good portion of who we are, won't allow us to answer the question in any useful form.
Some studies say that up to 80% of our brain is the unconscious activities that keep us running, ignore that part of the brain and believing we will find the "self" in the 20% is bordering on foolishness.
