Am I seeing things or has HackerNews changed its font, at least on the article pages? If so, any details about what typeface it was changed from/to and the motivations behind it?

It has not changed it, it's still "Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;"<p>Maybe something wiped Verdana from your machine?
