Then we need non-Chinese competition - including competing on price.<p>In Australia there&#x27;s simply nothing close on price and functionality to BYD and MG, both Chinese. I imagine the situation in France is similar. The cheapest Tesla is about 20,000$ more than the cheapest MG.<p>Toyota should have been leading competition on electric cars. How sad they&#x27;re ignoring them.

The headline kind of buries the lede. They&#x27;re actually redoing their EV incentives to take into account carbon in manufacturing.<p>Which is a good thing.<p>They claim that it&#x27;s got an ulterior motive to prefer locally made cars, which may be true, but this kind of carbon trade tariff is a vastly underused tool in battling climate change.
