Intel’s Ponte Vecchio: Chiplets Gone Crazy

"I don’t think chiplets are a major culprit, since vertical stacking on AMD’s CPUs only adds a couple extra nanoseconds of latency. Rather, I suspect Intel struggled because they were not used to making big GPUs with big caches."
Like many, I was highly critical of Intel before it had decent competition from AMD in that its CPU prices were too high and that the performance of its chips lagged what we expected of them. Similarly, Intel's entry into the high-end GPU market is to be welcomed as it will add to Nvidia's competition which has been long overdue.
If Ponte Vecchio is successful and doesn't end up a dead-end then little doubt its performance/latency will improve with time.
Why the silly name and what's its relevance? Did some Intel executive visit Florence recently?
