It's not like generative AI is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Despite the hype, it's not even clear what it's best application may be. Taken with the downsides, including the enormous power demands and copyright questions, it's important that the law and regulations keep up and address the societal effects and, where necessary, provide for relief to the harmed.

If you are not violating the law, then just say so and be done with it.
But if you are violating the law, then arguing that the world will collapse if your illegal conduct isn't allowed to continue is a pretty brazen argument.

What's the problem with pumping the brakes on generative AI?
Moving fast and breaking things results in a lot of broken things, potentially including lives of people we exploit to enjoy this cascade of shiny technology.
