A lot of pieces for this were developed back in the pre-Facebook days and have just been laying around: RSS, Dublin Core, pingback/linkpack/refback, FOAF, microformats, webrings, etc. I can't remember names of media embeds atm but those were a thing too.
I can imagine an app that was basically an RSS feedreader that assembled a personal FB/Xitter-like collection of items for you. Maybe there'd be a spec for indicating whether each item is like a blog posting or a message or a SLYT-like media piece and your app could display it as such.
I can see there being apps that ran on your phone or PC but also things more like IRC bouncers that you could access from multiple devices. Or plugins to e.g. WordPress. Or hosted services like how a lot of people today use Mastodon or Lemmy. Could be interesting.
I have been looking into all of these as part of a civic volunteer decentralized discovery/connection effort… I don´t know about the label to put on it, but POSSE (Publish (on your) Own Server, Syndicate Everywhere) seems like a great idea.
Remember FriendFeed? Facebook bought that and killed it.
