People are often celebrated when they’ve died on HN (like everywhere). But this creates a sense of continued loss that impacts the collective psyche. And also - it misses an opportunity to praise people who’ve they’re alive.<p>I propose we start celebrating 80th birthdays for notable people in the tech/science community. It’s a way to celebrate people while they’re here, as well as to see a continual stream of people that are making it into old age (and are still going).
Not a bad idea, but why not 50th? Few people make their world changing splashes after that age, and they're generally not into the "embarrassing opinionated" stage then, either.
