Tell HN: Apple will subscribe you to AppleTV+ without telling you where from

3 pointsby devchixover 1 year ago
TLDR: Apple will treat a purchase request from a device they don't recognized as yours, as valid.
This morning I received 2 emails from Apple, one to tell me I have subscribed to AppleTV+, the other to tell me:
"Your Apple ID, <me>, was just used to purchased AppleTV+ on a computer or device that had not previously been used. ..."
I have not done this, in fact I have avoided all these come-ons like the plague. I logged in to AppleID, checked all my devices and my digital footprint, all looks OK, I changed my password, checked AppleTV+ and sure enough I have the ability to stream.
I called Apple and asked their tech support if they can tell me what is this "device that had not previously been used". Apple should know what it is because "not-X" is an identifier. The support guy says he is unable to tell me.
I hope this is a bug, which is the most benign explanation, and not a smarmy way to drive up the subscribers number. There's no money involved so no real harm done, I'll cancel it. Any more of this, from any company, I feel should be a class action lawsuit. If there's a transaction, the seller should be able to present a recognizable and attributable record of it.
