Ask HN: Why does Amazon not remove fake reviews using AI?

1 pointsby ghoomketuover 1 year ago
Amazon india is a cesspool of fake reviews.
I’ve seen reviews for shoes on shoe polish products.
The reviewer profiles are obviously bots, they copy-paste the same text with minor variations.
How hard is it for Amazon to use some AI to flag and delete these reviews?
Or do they have some ulterior motive to keep them? Because reviews are useless if they are not trustworthy.

Cause AI is not magic. And how flaky it is, because more and more obvious the larger the systems get. If your false negatives are 1 in 10. And you have to check 10 million reviews a day lot of shit gets through.
I know guys who work on Amazon Search (so they have to handle scammers who game their algos to pump up rankings). Its a daily cat and mouse game. The more products they sell, the more variations to the game. No magic solution and most importantly cost to add a review is 0. So the spammer is mass bombarding the system 24x7.
