Ask HN: What do you expect from a great VP of Engineering?

2 pointsby upupupandawayabout 1 year ago
Got promoted into a position where I will be overseeing a relative large set of teams. I've been an engineering manager for 12 years now for smaller orgs.
What got me here won't get me there, however. Being super close to engineering and developing the team 1-1 or via 1 management layer won't cut it anymore. To overcome this, I am actively pursuing learning more formally about engineering leadership, setting vision, mission, strategy, tying everything together (this I did for the 30/40-strong orgs but this is a different ball game).
With that, what in your opinion are some great traits, behaviors, or professional initiatives that make a VPE you'd like to work for/with? My normal style of management is staying connected to engineering, continue to develop tech skills on the side to be credible, formally develop the team and focus on promoting from within. More will be expected from me, I'm sure, so I am curious to learn exactly what.
Thanks!
