Ask HN: What do you do with your (driving) commute time?

1 pointsby travisgriggsabout 1 year ago
I'm relocating to a nearby town, such that my drive-to-work time is going to go from 7 minutes to nearly 60 minutes (but hybrid, so less days a week). This is the one down side of the move. While I don't look forward to increased travel times/costs, I am eager to "make the best of it". I'm curious what others have done to make their commutes not be a complete waste? Looking for recommendations on how to productively use the time to be a better/happier person.

I listen to music. But it's not just any music - it's foreign music. Music in languages I'm studying.
I can currently sing whole songs in Italian, Russian, and Thai. Although it does require some extra work while at home (reading lyrics, translating). If I'm not doing this, then I'll listen to a language podcast.
It's not about productivity for me, I just enjoy it.

My only piece of advice would be to stop trying to squeeze productivity out of every minute of your day. Pick up a podcast you like - not a tech one - and listen to that. Or start listening to books you enjoy.

Listening to Judas Priest worked for me. I hated commuting. No car, no office, no veal fattening pen cubicle farms anymore. Sorry.
