Ask HN: What are the TLDs that have cheapest renewal fees

6 pointsby isulemanabout 1 year ago
I host a lot of self-hosted applications and often need a domain to assign to them. For quite some time I used .tk .ga and .ca but they are not available anymore. Other TLDs that can be bought for cheap like 1-2 dollars levy around 20-50 dollars renewal fees. So, I need suggestions. Would love to find something for $1 that also RENEWS for $1.

You can have a look on https://tld-list.com/
But do you really need entire domains for the self-hosted applications? Why not just use a subdomain?

XYZ has a 111B type domain which has cheap renewals but only if you meet the naming criteria: https://gen.xyz/1111b which here means it's an all-numbers domain name.
BUT! also keep in mind that the XYZ TLD has stigma associated with it and I think some filters outright block the entire TLD.

On OVH you can sort per renewal price: https://www.ovhcloud.com/fr/domains/tld/
Looks like the .ovh is the cheapest there, 3€, if you can handle that.

Off topic and out of sheer interest (and if you don't mind), would you like sharing what purpose do you use those many domains for? I'm guessing it is for side projects. Could be of interest to general community here. Thanks

Find a short a memorable .com/net/org (I found an easily memorized, pronounceable 4 char .org domain) and host your subdomains from that. ~$10/yr
