I scanned my sheet music to load onto an iPad. I scanned the cover in color, then scanned the pages in b&w, then combined the two with Adobe Acrobat. Preview on MacOS reads these files fine, but the PDF viewer on iOS displays the cover page only. If I try to scroll into the music, it briefly flashes the page and then goes back to the cover page. After doing this about 5 times, it gives up and shows a black screen - won't even display the cover page. My iPad is up-to-date.
Now I have around 350 books of music that I can't view on an iPad. A lesson learned: when doing a large project like this, run some things all the way through the pipeline first to make sure it will work. I just assumed PDF viewing was not a big deal.
It's very annoying the amount of bugs and issues I encounter on my macbook and the official apple apps that come with it.
Same for iPhone 14 and 15 (me and wife), most bugged phones I've ever used, notification center is constantly broken on both, UI is inconsistent everywhere, super weird decisions like the calculator doesn't have history or to scan a doc I have to use the notes app (wtf)
most expensive and worst software experience I've ever used
I've been using Apple Mac's since early 2000s-ish, iPhone and iPad since release. It seems to me like in the past 5ish years the amount of bugs and UI inconsistencies in iOS/MacOS has increased. A few times I've wanted to start a blog cataloging all these things.
For example on iPad there is no redo button in the iWork apps. It took me a google to find out you have to press and hold the undo button to reveal the redo button. I admit this is a minor nuisance, but there was plenty of screen real estate to show that button.
The most significant bug I've been dealing with lately is with mobile Safari whereby it will just crash. There are a few ways this happens. The first is if I create a new tab, randomly I will get a blank page where nothing works which requires a force restart. Another way is if I press the back button, or navigate to a new page via tapping a link, safari will not load the page. The current page freezes. Again requiring a force restart.
iPad Pro supports an external monitor. This has been entirely unusable for me. Out of nowhere the video signal is lost. A few times shortly after that the iPad restarts. Additionally with external monitor mode one is forced to use Stage Manager which is entirely unusable without a proper touchpad. If you're using a mouse good luck getting the stages to reveal themselves. I expected more from Apple who prides themselves on having the best UI/UX.
A other issue is Apple has added the ability for iPad apps to have "windows". This doesn't work as expected. Many times I've created a window, worked on something else and return to safari to find no windows and all my tabs gone. I suspect it has something to do with closing the app.
My favorite bug on MacOS which I encounter sometimes is reconnecting to SMB shares. They randomly not reconnect after waking from sleep. A reboot fixes this. Although this could be an issue with the server.
Closing on a positive note- the one killer feature I miss when I'm working on Windows is Preview. It's really a great app.
