I have lived and attended school in Bolivia, and let me say, South America has a dictator tendency. It's no surprise that this is what may be being attempted in Brazil. At the same time the history of most South American countries is one that is born out of revolution, so it's also not something that lasts very long (with some exceptions), however the consequences certainly do.
