On /r/lk99, one comment strikes ([1]):<p>>This is a cheap trick - the coil wrapping around the sample literally creates an electromagnet.<p>> The reason it's not unstable are because the two ends of the wire are holding the sample at each edge and coiled around the middle point of the sample, they are both tapering outwards like a V imagining that the point of the V is the sample.<p>> The two wires are acting as a single hinge, thus it is held in place when it repelled from the fat stack of magnets underneath.<p>> The reason it doesn't work with copper is that copper probably has less or similar resistance than the wire and thus short circuits the coil - electricity prefers the shortest path.
